Healthy and Happy Hearts – Go Red!
Did you know that February is American Heart Month? In fact February 2, 2018 is National Wear Red Day. This is a movement started by the American Heart Association for people – women in particular – to get heart smart. Unfortunately, heart disease is the No. 1 killer of women, causing 1 in 3 deaths each year. That’s approximately one woman every minute! That statistic alone is very scary, and unfortunately very real. Elise and I want to use our platform to encourage women to get out there and check out some gyms and workout classes that are FUN – and most of all – that promote a healthy lifestyle and heart .
According to the American Heart Association, a woman who ‘goes red’ follows an exercise routine, eats a healthy diet, visits the doctor for important check ups, and influences others by talking about heart health.Exercise is obviously something I believe in – my hope is that just by reading this it will encourage you to get out there and move more this month. Here are some of my top fav ways to break a sweat in honor of National Heart Awareness month:
Can you say major cardio? Jumping around and punching a heavy bag can burn upwards of 500 calories per hour (depending on body weight) according to livestrong.com. Not to mention the stress relief you get from beating up on that bag after a long day of work. Title Boxing in Westlake and 9 Round in Rocky River are my top two favorites when it comes to boxing. Do your heart some good and go all out ‘Rocky’ on that bag. If you happen to check out either gym – tell them the Workout Wanderers sent you!
I’m no expert or doctor (duh), but every time I leave a yoga class I feel like I got a massage, therapy session, and workout all in one. Yoga might not be the most high-intensity cardio you can do (unless you hit up a powerful yoga class), but there is something about it that just seems good for the soul – and what’s good for the soul has got to be good for the heart, RIGHT?? According to the American Heart Association, excessive stress can lead to everything from high blood pressure, to asthma to ulcers to irritable bowel syndrome.Yoga is definitely one of those things that takes away all the stress of the day, and you feel SO much better after an hour class. Do yourself a favor and go OM it out at some of our favorite yoga studios, Inner Bliss and The Studio. Your heart (and soul) will thank you.
Back to cardio – cue spinning! I don’t know about you, but during a spinning class I feel like I can speed up a mountain or go so fast until my legs are jelly. The amount of cardio you do in a 60-minute class is a surefire way to keeping your heart in check! Like yoga, many spin instructions have you set an “intention” at the beginning of class to get you geared up for class and pull your focus to the present. These intentions get you ready for the amount of work you will put into your workout – ALSO – it makes you feel all the feels. Similar to yoga, spinning has a calming effect on your body that eases stress and tension, thus getting rid of any stress on your body. Harness Cycle and Groove Ryde are two fav spots we like to wander.
Bring a Buddy
Lastly (and most importantly) working out is way more fun with a buddy – most things in life are! Not only does it leave you more accountable when a buddy is counting on you to join them for a workout, but it’s just downright way more fun. You can laugh at how bad you are at Zumba choreography, encourage each other to run faster, and get in some quality bestie time! Laughing quite possibly can be the best medicine for a happy and healthy life. Again, I am no doctor, but if you’re happy and in good spirits (and good company) then your heart will be happy, too. Try one of these heart healthy workouts and don’t forget your best accessory – your buddy!
As long as you’re moving and having fun with your workouts, you are on the right track. To kick off American Heart Awareness Month in February we are excited to be attending (and exhibiting) at the Go Red for Women Health Expo and Luncheon. We love our CLE Wanderers and want to promote a healthy lifestyle – and remind ourselves – just how important heart health is!
Are you attending the Go Red luncheon? Stop by the exhibit hall from 10:00am – 11:45am on 2/2/18 and say hi! What are some of your favorite ways to break a sweat? Tell us in the comments below!
I’m going to leave you with this Go Red hype video – if this doesn’t get you pumped up, I don’t know what will.
